August 20-23
What is the 65th anniversary all about?
In Paul’s epistle to the Philippians he wrote, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ”. Paul could have written those words to Pastor Cletus Leveritt in July of 1960, when he was diligently ministering to the people of Kodiak seeking to get this church plant off the ground. And on August 20, 1960, Berean Baptist Church was officially launched. God used the faithfulness of missionary pastors, like Cletus and others, to establish a healthy church in Kodiak, a church that has endured. Berean has endured through hardship and pain and she has remained faithful in seasons of plenty. Why? Because Berean was not built on a pastor's personality, nor people's preferences; no, she has endured because she is built on the solid rock, Jesus Christ. And now as we celebrate 65 years, we will look back at God's faithfulness through the years, seeing how God sustained Berean by His grace. We will also look forward to what lies ahead, pressing on into the plan the Lord has for us: to show his glory in Kodiak and around the world. Most of all, we will look up and glorify our heavenly father, who has been faithful to us from generation to generation. This will be a time of celebration, preparation and glorification. Each evening, we will break bread together, worship together and spend time in fellowship.
Who should come?
EVERYONE... Whether you have been at Berean 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years, or 60 years, you are welcome and wanted. We will have some special guests, including former pastors Mark Kernan and Dan Minyard, who will be joining and helping to preach each evening. All ages are welcome, from babies to boomers and beyond; all will be included in our celebration.
What is this SERVE Kodiak Initiative?
Thursday through Saturday mornings, our church will blanket our community with the love of Christ. This will be something like a mission trip to Kodiak. Our hope is to mobilize you to live as "sent ones" in Kodiak, embodying the Great Commission. There will be 4 types of teams serving our community: children's outreach, labor, mercy and prayer. Each team's aim will be to bombard Kodiak with the Gospel, proclaiming and portraying the grace of God in word and deed.
SERVE stands for: See the brokenness in Kodiak, Engage with people’s felt needs, Radiate God’s love to our community, Verbalize the Gospel, Exalt Christ. Our hope is that this initiative will be the first of many SERVE Kodiak initiatives because we believe God has placed us on this island to saturate Kodiak with the Gospel for His glory.
